Product Overview
Toshiba recently debuted two color MFPs that support legal-sized (8.5″ x 14″) paper: the e-STUDIO389CS and the e-STUDIO479CS. The e-STUDIO389CS ($5,663) prints and copies at up to 40 ppm, while the e-STUDIO479CS ($8,330) runs at 50 ppm. Both devices include standard printing, copying, scanning and faxing.
The e-STUDIO389CS has a first-copy-time of 6.5 seconds in color and 120,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle. The e-STUDIO479CS’s first-copy-time is 5.5 seconds in color and the maximum monthly duty cycle is 150,000 pages. Warm-up time on both MFPs is 90 seconds.
There’s a 1.2 GHz processor and 2 GB of standard memory that can be optionally expanded to 4 GB. The e-STUDIO389CS has an optional 320 GB hard drive (standard on the e-STUDIO479CS). PCL and PostScript printing language is standard, as well as USB and Ethernet connectivity. Wireless and parallel connectivity is optional.
Both devices include a 7″ tablet-style color touchscreen interface with single-button workflows for commonly-accessed features.

The e-STUDIO389CS and e-STUDIO479CS is compact enough to fit on a desktop but also works as a floor-standing configuration with additional paper trays. They’re intended for medium-to-large-sized offices that need high-volume printing but don’t require advanced features.
Features
Paper handling starts with a 550-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose tray. Toshiba offers companies the choice of optionally adding three additional 550-sheet trays for a maximum capacity of 2,300 sheets. As noted above, each tray supports legal-sized paper.
There’s a standard 100-sheet reversing automatic document feeder (RADF) that scans paper at up to 60 ipm. There are no finishing options.
The scanning function supports the following destinations: email, USB, FTP and network. It also supports TIFF, JPEG, XPS and PDF file formats.
The faxing function includes a 33.6 kbps modem with Super G3 compatibility.
The devices include strong security features, such as user authentication, port and connection filtering and 256-bit AES encryption. Users can also reduce paper and power usage by using environmental features, such as duplexing, quiet mode, sleep mode and hibernate mode.

Shortcomings
The e-STUDIO389CS and e-STUDIO479CS doesn’t include some features, such as ledger-sized paper support or finishing options. If a company requires those features, they can check out Toshiba’s other color MFPs, such as the e-STUDIO5015AC Series.

Toshiba has been on the upswing in the office copier business, thanks to a steadily improving product line.
Although it may be among the smaller forces in copiers, the company as a whole is much larger than most of its competitors.
Toshiba handouts include Fortune corporate rankings indicating that its global revenues across all product lines are about the same as those of Canon, Ricoh and Xerox combined.
Product line: In recent years, Toshiba has been raising its copier profile both by re-energizing its U.S. marketing and by becoming more innovative with its products. Its line of e-STUDIO models is quite strong, and the company is starting to make an impact on the market.
Toshiba distribution: Toshiba brand sales are split nearly 50-50 between dealers and the company’s Toshiba Business Solutions division. In all, Toshiba has about 250 copier dealers, of which about 30% have Toshiba as its exclusive A3 MFP OEM partner.
