Product Overview
The new Toshiba e-STUDIO2051c and 2551c joins Toshiba’s color MFP lineup as entry-level machines for the small-to-medium size market. The e-STUDIO2051c ($4,999) copies and prints at 20ppm (in both black and white and color) and has a 56,000-page duty cycle. The e-STUDIO2551c ($5,999) runs at 25ppm and has a 70,000-page monthly duty cycle. Both machines support standard copying, printing, and scanning (and optional faxing), and has a color first-page-out time of 10.3 seconds. Standard memory is 2GB.
Both machines also include a 7″ VGA color control panel that is adjustable and one-touch buttons to access specific multifunction features. It can be tilted to reduce glare, and it is also Section 508 compliant. (This is the governmental standard for handicap access.) Also new with these models is an upgraded Universal Print Driver, which allows users to print from any e-STUDIO machine in the office without a need for setting up individual print drivers.
Features
As with earlier e-STUDIO models, these machines have an integrated controller architecture, called e-BRIDGE, built directly into the machine. Thus the copier’s operating system runs all of the machine’s functions — copy, print, and scan. This type of design improves multifunctional performance and lowers manufacturing costs as well. PCL printing is supported. Ethernet (including Gigabit Ethernet) is standard.
Network scanning is supported. Scan-to functionality includes scan-to-file, scan-to-TWAIN, and scan-to-email. File formats supported are JPEG, TIFF, PDF, and secure PDF. The Advanced Scanning ReRite software is available as an option.
The fax option is based on a 33.6kbps modem with JBIG compression. Other faxing features are fax forwarding, Internet and network faxing.
Paper handling starts with a 250-sheet tray and a 100-sheet bypass. You can add various paper options for a maximum of 2,000 sheets. These optional paper trays include a 550-sheet unit ($550), a 550-sheet pedestal ($980), and a 550-sheet drawer ($550). Each tray handles up to ledger-size paper. Also optional are automatic duplexing and a 100-sheet RADF ($1,585).
Output includes an inner tray and an optional job separator. There are no finishing options.
Security features include IP and Mac address filtering, job access protocol, and network authentication. Also, a new security feature includes what Toshiba calls “role based access control”, which allows administrators to restrict users without having to use an LDAP server.
These machines also provide easy maintenance as well as reduce machine downtime by providing easy replaceable units.

Shortcomings
If you are looking for a machine with a hard drive, finishing, and other advanced features, we recommend you look at the e-STUDIO2550c family. This machine best suits small-to-medium sized offices that do not have large copying or printing needs.

About
Toshiba has been on the upswing in the office copier business, thanks to a steadily improving product line. Although it may be among the smaller forces in copiers, the company as a whole is much larger than most of its competitors. Toshiba handouts include Fortune corporate rankings indicating that its global revenues across all product lines are about the same as those of Canon, Ricoh, and Xerox combined.
Product line: In recent years, Toshiba has been raising its copier profile both by re-energizing its U.S. marketing and by becoming more innovative with its products. Its line of e-STUDIO models is quite strong, and the company is starting to make an impact on the market.
Toshiba distribution: Almost all of Toshiba’s brand sales are currently through dealers. However, Toshiba has a subsidiary that has steadily been acquiring dealerships in certain markets in order to operate them as wholly owned subsidiaries. In all, Toshiba has about 350 copier dealers, of which about 70% handle Toshiba exclusively. Toshiba also sells through its wholly owned Toshiba Business Solutions subsidiaries.
