Product Overview
The new DS-780N Series consist of three scanners added to Epson’s lineup of devices aimed at small-to-medium-sized workgroups. They range from 35ppm to 45ppm simplex speed and include Epson’s new three-year limited warranty with next business day device replacement.
The series are:
- The DS-575W ($449 MSRP) scans at up to 35ppm simplex and up to 70ipm duplex (in both black and color). It has a daily duty cycle of 4,000 sheets and a 50-sheet automatic document feeder. It has standard wireless connectivity.
- The DS-770 ($999 MSRP) scans at up to 45ppm simplex and up to 90ipm duplex (in both black and color). It has a daily duty cycle of 5,000 sheets and a 100-sheet automatic document feeder. Epson offers an optional networking kit for this scanner.
- The DS-780N ($1,099 MSRP) includes most of the same technical specs as the DS-770. However, it has standard networking connectivity as well as a built-in LCD touch screen panel and network security features (such as user authentication).
The built-in LCD panel on the DS-780N allows users to set up to 30 pre-defined workflows for commonly-used tasks (i.e., text enhancement, scanning destinations).
All three scanners support single-pass duplex scanning, meaning they can scan both sides of a page at once.

The new Epson DS-780N Series are scalable scanners for the small-to-medium-sized workgroups looking for secure network and cloud scanning. We especially like the three-year warranty which is far longer than Epson’s other scanners (typically three months or a year).
Features
All scanners can read in a wide range of formats, from business cards to 11″ x 17″ paper. They also have a wide range of scanning features with the Epson Image Processing Technology, including text and image adjustments, background removal, auto crop, black page removal and skew correction. Documents can be saved as JPEGs or PDFs. Double-feed detection is also supported.
All three scanners are compatible with both PCs and Macs. USB connectivity is supported. As mentioned above, the DS-575W supports wireless connectivity, while the DS-780N includes standard networking (optional on the DS-770).
Users can scan files to searchable PDFs and editable Word and Excel with the built-in OCR software; they can also scan to various cloud storage accounts, such as Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive, SharePoint and FileBound.
The DS-575W and DS-770N includes bundled software, such as Epson Scan 2, Epson Document Capture, ABBYY FineReader Sprint and Presto! BizCard OCR. The Document Capture software has been updated with a streamlined user interface and includes color enhancement tools and the ability to change the file name of scanned document.
The DS-780N’s bundled software are Epson Scan 2, Document Capture Pro and EMC Captiva.

Shortcomings
The DS-780N scanners are not intended for offices with low-volume scanning or very high-volume scanning needs.

Epson America is a division of Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of imaging products, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and watches. The company has been an innovative designer of ink jet printers and sells an extensive product line. Most of these are geared to home and school use, but Epson continues to extend its line further into the office environment.
Epson has been making a more aggressive play for the document scanner market, although the company’s been in the multipurpose office scanner business for years. The models and other additions to its model line seem to be part of an effort to further extend its current scanner technology. As part of this effort, Epson makes these scanners available in consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, along with Epson dealers and on its website.
