Product Overview
The Lexmark CS820 Series joins other new single-function color printers (such as the CS720 Series) in Lexmark’s lineup. This series consists of three devices and prints at 60 ppm in both black and color. The printers are intended for large offices with a lot of printing needs.
Lexmark continuously upgrades its devices with faster engines and newer features. The CS820 Series printers are intended for large workgroups or offices that typically print often, but don’t need copying or scanning functions.
Like the CS720 Series, the CS820 Series features Lexmark’s latest generation of its eTask interface: a 4.3″ color touchscreen that works like a tablet with a 10-key number pad. These devices accept up to A4 paper size (8.5″ x 14″).
There are three devices in this series. They are:
- The CS820de ($1,899), which is the base model
- The CS820dte (price unknown) that includes a second 550-sheet tray along with its standard input capacity
- The CS820dtfe (price unknown) that includes a standard inline staple finisher.
All devices include a 1.3 GHz processor and 1,024 MB of memory that’s expandable to 3,072 MB. Lexmark offers an optional hard disk drive. First-page-out time in color is 7 seconds.
Lexmark has a new solution that supports these devices: the Kofax Onboarding Agility framework. It’s designed to help customer-intensive industries (such as banking and health care) streamline their new customer onboarding processes. Its features include an analytics dashboard, reference templates, sample process workflows, customizable user interfaces and interactive customer communications.

Features
PCL and PostScript printing language are supported. Other standard printing languages include direct PDF, direct image, personal printer data stream (PPDS) and Microsoft XPS. USB and Ethernet connectivity are standard, while Wi-Fi is optional.
Paper handling starts with a 550-sheet tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. Users can add in three additional 550-sheet trays or a 2,200-sheet high-capacity tray for a maximum of 4,500 sheets. Note that the CS820dte and CS820dtfe include a second standard 550-sheet tray in their configuration. The devices support up to A4 (8.5″ x 14″) paper size as well as envelopes.
The output capacity is 500 sheets. Duplexing is supported. The CS820dtfe supports a standard inline stapling finisher (optional on the other two devices).
The monthly duty cycle is 200,000 pages. However, Lexmark recommends a range of 2,500 to 25,000 pages per month.
As with its older printers and MFPs, Lexmark provides an excellent cost per page on the CS820 Series. It uses Lexmark’s Unison Toner. The Unison Toner’s print system has a separate toner, imaging unit and fuser, using a multi-piece architecture design that leads to reduced toner waste and long-life system reliability. It also prints at up to 1,200 dpi for crisper print quality. And it alerts users when supplies are needed (e.g., low toner warning and number of pages left to print).
Just like it’s done for many years, Lexmark offers its Rewards Program, which is a loyalty program that provides customers with a free high-yield toner cartridge for every 10 toner cartridges sent back to Lexmark for recycling. It also provides a free imaging kit when needed. Consumable prices under the Rewards Program tend to be significantly cheaper.
For our calculations, we’ve used the prices based on the extra-high-capacity yields (33,000 pages for black and 22,000 pages for each color) and the Rewards Program. Therefore, the cost per page (not including prices for the photoconductor and developer) is 1.6 cents in black and 6.5 cents in color. Based on the extra-high yields and Lexmark’s environmentally-friendly features, these operating costs are extremely reasonable for large offices that print many pages.

Shortcomings
These devices don’t accept tabloid (11″ x 17″) paper sizes.
Also, they aren’t intended for smaller offices.
